How many sets per week are actually enough

For most people, ten quality sets per muscle group deliver almost all the results they can expect. More isn’t always better.

Volume is the easiest variable to increase and the easiest one to overdo. When progress stalls, the first instinct is to add more sets. Sometimes that works, but more often it just makes your workouts longer and slows your recovery.

A range, not a number

For most muscle groups, ten to twenty quality sets a week cover what your body can actually use. Below ten you maintain, and above twenty you’re usually just piling up fatigue.

A quality set

A set counts if it’s done through a full range of motion, close to failure and under control. Three sets taken to the limit are worth more than six done halfway.

If you see a muscle group in your program with fewer sets than you expected, it’s usually on purpose: the room has been left for whatever takes priority in that block.
